Berte Bøe, MD, PhD

Dr. Berte Bøe is a Consultant Orthopedic surgeon at Oslo University Hospital with a special interest in Complex Shoulder and Knee Surgery. She completed her residency in Orthopedics and Traumatology at Diakonhjemmet and Oslo University Hospital and was early in her career eagerly involved in orthopaedic research. She defended her PhD thesis in 2012 and is now supervising PhD students at University of Oslo. From 2010 she has been working in the Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine department, in Lars Engebretsen’s group. In cooperation with her mentor in shoulder surgery, Tom Ludvigsen, she was the first to establish the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure in Norway.

She is involved in several clinical research projects, both local and in international multicenter studies in shoulder and knee surgery. In clinic, she is responsible of teaching medical students and residents and has been invited to several national and international meetings as a speaker and faculty member.

Dr. Berte Bøe is the current President of the Norwegian Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow. She is involved in the peer review process for AJSM, VJSM, Arthroscopy, KSSTA and JISAKOS; is a Principal Reviewer of the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM); and is on the AJSM Electronic Media Editorial Board (AJSM EMEB). She is also an Editorial board member of ESSKA Academy and Video Journal of Sports Medicine (VJSM), Committee member of ESSKA-ESA and ISAKOS Communication Committee, Norway’s National Delegate of SECEC.

Dr. Bishop is a fellowship‐trained orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon who practices at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in New York, NY. After graduating as valedictorian from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, she completed her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She then completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY. During her fellowship, Dr. Bishop served as one of the team physicians for the New York Knicks and Iona College. She has since been an assistant physician for the Philadelphia 76ers as well the current head team physician of the New York Empire professional American Ultimate Disc League Team.

Dr. Bishop serves on the Editorial Board of AJSM and VJSM. She is an active reviewer for many other scientific journals including JBJS, CORR, OJSM, and Sports Health. She is serving on the inaugural AJSM Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force. She is also a member of the AOSSM Emerging Leaders Task Force, a program designed to mentor and engage future members of the Society.

Dr. Bishop specializes in treating sports related injuries of the knee, shoulder and elbow. She is particularly interested in research concerning sports outcomes, patellofemoral instability, and the female athlete. Dr. Bishop continues to be a competitive runner. She recently competed in the 2020 US Olympic Marathon Trials placing in the top 50.
