Barry Boden, MD

Dr. Boden is in private practice at The Orthopedic Center, a Division of CAO in Rockville, Maryland and specializes on sports medicine injuries of the knee and shoulder. He is also a consultant at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and an Adjunct Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences where he devotes his time to teaching and research projects with the sports medicine fellows. Dr. Boden has served on the medical staff for U.S. Soccer, DC United, Montgomery College, and the Maccabiah Games. He is an active member of the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and has volunteered on numerous committees including chair of the publications and public relations committees.
Dr. Boden attended Haverford College where he participated on the soccer and track teams. After college, Dr. Boden spent one year conducting research in muscle bioenergetics at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed medical school and an orthopedic residency at Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Boden continued his training with a fellowship in sports medicine at Duke University.
Dr. Boden’s research focus is the mechanism, risk factors, and prevention of ACL injuries as well as the epidemiology and prevention of catastrophic athletic injuries in athletes with a goal of injury prevention. His research has received funding from the NIH, the AOSSM, and the National Operating Committee for Standards in Athletic Equipment. He and his colleagues have been awarded the AOSSM Excellence in Research Award and the David Sisk Award. He is extremely fortunate and grateful to have collaborated with some of the great minds in sports medicine including Drs. Joseph Torg, William Garrett, John Feagin, Fred Mueller, and many others.
Dr. Boden resides in Maryland with his wife.

Bert Mandelbaum, MD, DHL (hon)

Dr. Mandelbaum is a medical graduate of Washington University Medical School in St. Louis in 1980. He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and fellowship in Sports Medicine from UCLA. He served on the faculty at UCLA from 1986-89 and subsequently joined the Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group. He presently practices there and serves as the Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and Medical Director for the FIFA Medical Center of Excellence in Santa Monica. He also serves as Co-director of Clinical Affairs of the Kerlan Jobe Institute at Cedars Sinai. He has served as Chairman of the CONCACAF medical committee since 2016.
Academically, he is well published, including over 100 journal articles and five books. He has received five national awards for Excellence in Research in the Field of Sports Medicine. Since 1995 he has been on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine and associate editor for Current Concept Reviews. He also served as executive board member (1999-2001) for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Presently, he is Past President of the International Cartilage Repair Society (2008-09). He was honored in a distinguished fashion in 2009 with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters (DHL) from the State University of New York. He served as Director of Research for Major League Baseball 2011-2015.
As a team physician, Dr. Mandelbaum has worked with UCLA Athletics (1985-1989) and Pepperdine University (1990-present), as well as the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA MLS teams. He was the Chief Medical Officer for Women’s World Cup Soccer 1999 and 2003, US Soccer Men’s National Teams Physician since 1991, and the assistant Medical Director for Major League Soccer since 1996. He also served as USA Team Physician for Soccer World Cups ’94 in the USA, ’98 in France, 2002 in Japan and Korea, Germany in 2006, and South Africa in 2010. He served as FIFA medical officer for Brazil World Cup 2014. In 2002, he was appointed to FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Committee (F-MARC). In 2007, he was appointed to FIFA’s Sports Medicine Committee until 2017. He also served as Olympic Medical Officer for the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, and RIO 2016 games. He was Chief Medical Officer for LA 2015 World Special Olympic Games, the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 and 2017, and COPA Centenario in 2016.
He has published his first motivational and inspiration book entitled … The Win Within…. Capturing Your Victorious Spirit. He also does motivational speaking for societies, companies, and groups. He also writes a monthly column for Medscape and The US World News Report.
He is married to Ruth, a Family Physician and Medical Executive with 3 children Rachel, 27, Jordan, 25, and Ava, 21.
