Olufemi (Femi) R. Ayeni, MD, MSc, FRCSC is an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery and fellowship director of the sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship at McMaster University, Canada.  He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency training at McMaster University followed by 2 additional years of sports medicine fellowship training first at the University of Ottawa under the tutelage of Donald H. Johnson, MD and then at the Hospital for Special Surgery.  His clinical focus addresses athletic injuries of the hip, knee, and shoulder, and he is the medical director of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.  He has a research focus addressing hip preservation surgery and surgical outcomes in sports medicine. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and 20 book chapters in the last 7 years.  Dr. Ayeni’s clinical research addressing femoroacetabular impingement has been funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.  He is an active reviewer for over 20 journals, an associate editor for several orthopaedic journals, and sits on several editorial boards and scientific committees. He recently edited a textbook titled Diagnosis and Management of Femoroacetabular Impingent, An Evidence-Based Approach (eds. Ayeni, Karlsson, Philippon, Safran) and will defend his PhD thesis titled “Femoroacetabular Impingement-The Pursuit of Evidence” this fall (2017) at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Dr. Ayeni is married to Theresa, who is an ear, nose and throat surgeon, and has 2 children.

Sam Oussedik, BSc, MBBS, FRCS(Tr&Orth)

Sam trained as an undergraduate at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He went on to join the North West Thames orthopaedic training rotation following a period devoted to stem cell research. He continued to develop his interest in lower limb surgery in general and knee surgery in particular. In 2010, he spent a year as the Knee Fellow at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and team doctor for the Gordon Highlanders rugby union team, gaining further specialized experience in knee and sports surgery.

Collaborations with the team at the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute culminated in several publications on sports and arthroplasty topics.

Sam was appointed to University College Hospital London in 2012 as a lower limb surgeon with a special interest in knee surgery. His elective practice is 90% knee based, including all aspects of knee surgery from ligament reconstruction and joint preservation work to primary and revision arthroplasty. He also retains a keen interest in general trauma.

His research interests include joint preservation through cartilage restoration and osteotomy about the knee and gaining the best performance from knee arthroplasty.  His studies include using computer navigation hardware to gain a better understanding of knee kinematics, the response to injury and the effects of surgical interventions; imaging cartilage in novel ways to evaluate the effects of treatments; and using cell based therapies in the early stages of osteoarthritis.

As the Director of Surgical Education at UCLH, Sam runs a number of instructional courses for basic and higher surgical trainees as well as masterclasses for fellow lower limb specialists. He is the co-author of books on trauma care and knee arthroplasty as well as an ever-increasing number of peer-reviewed publications.

In addition to editorial board duties with AJSM and OJSM, Sam is the Knee Editor for the Bone and Joint Journal.

In 2016, Sam was fortunate enough to be selected for the ABC travelling fellowship and gained a great insight into the US and Canadian Health systems.
